This page is for clinics, insurers, residency advisers, estate agents, and financial planners that serve people arranging a long stay in retirement. It is not a ranking of retirement destinations, and it is not personal financial or immigration advice. The marketing failure we see most often is a campaign that buys English speakers in a sunny city and then treats every click as a retiree. Many of those people are on a short stay and will not buy a policy, a residency route, or a home.
A long stay, planned before the flight
The person this page is for is organising income, healthcare, the right to remain, and housing for a stay measured in years. They may already spend winters in the country, or they may still be in their country of citizenship comparing options. A visitor who leaves in the spring, owns nothing, and has no intention of changing residence is a different customer. If your product needs a residence permit, a local address, or a minimum stay, the page should say that before the form.
United Nations statistical guidance distinguishes a change of usual residence from a short visit. Use that idea operationally: ask whether the person is trying to change where they live, not whether they like the coast. We do not estimate how many retirees live in any city.
Healthcare and income before the house
The order is often practical. Can I stay. Can I get treatment. What happens to the pension, the drawdown, or the premium. Then, where do I live. Firms that lead with a property gallery and never mention healthcare or the right to remain attract viewers who cannot complete. Put the constraint in the same place as the offer.
- Health insurance when the question is cover for someone who may no longer have an employer plan, including what is excluded and which local system they are expected to use.
- Financial planning when the question is retirement income across borders. Say who you can advise. Do not project a return. This site does not give financial advice.
- Legal services when the question is a residency or immigration route in one jurisdiction. Rules change, and the firm is not the government.
- Property when a home is the product, after the reader knows whether they are allowed to own and to occupy it.
School marketing is usually the wrong sibling of this brief. Households deciding around children are on the expat families page. Someone who has not stopped moving, and whose income is from remote work rather than retirement, is on the digital nomads page. A pension in one country and a house in another can also be a cross-border structure. Use that page when the structure is the product, and this page when the retirement move is the product.
Search journeys that last months
Retirees read, ask people who already made the move, and come back. A single slogan about retiring abroad does not answer them. A page about one country’s residency route, one healthcare path, or one type of tenure does, provided it shows the date the information was checked and tells the reader to confirm it. Content and search fit that behaviour. The query worth winning names the system or the status, not the word expat on its own.
Spain, Portugal, Thailand, Mexico, and Panama already discuss retirees or long-stay residents in their own city context. Use them to avoid copying one coast onto another. Being listed here is not a claim that these are the largest retirement markets, or that a campaign in them will produce a given number of buyers.
Separate residents from winter visitors
Language plus a country geo will include tourists, seasonal visitors, and local English speakers. None of those facts is a buying signal. Ask intended length of stay, whether residency is held or being applied for, which country pays the pension or the premium, and whether they need to own or only to rent. Enquiries without those answers are research traffic. Report them as such.
Paid social can remind someone who already read the residency page. It is an expensive way to discover retirees from scratch, because the cheaper clicks are often the visitors.
Age targeting is a weak lever, and sometimes a banned one
In the United States and Canada, Google does not allow age targeting on personalised ads for housing or consumer finance. A retirement property advertisement or a retirement-income product in those markets has to be found through the query and the landing page, not through an age bracket. Even where age targeting is allowed, “55 and older” still mixes locals, visitors, and people who will never move. Intent is the cleaner signal. Meta’s special ad categories for housing and financial products impose their own limits where they apply. Check the current rule for the country you are advertising in. We are not your compliance reviewer.
What we will not say
No best country. No tax saving stated as a figure. No life expectancy. No implication that a webinar signup is a client. If you can describe the stay you support and the countries you are allowed to mention, discuss your campaign or request a callback. We reply within one business day. Other audiences are on the audiences hub.
